Written by Laura R. Petovello, J.D., revised in October, 1998, by Donna Taranko and Sharon Nichols in association with the Holocaust Human Rights Center of Maine, The Spirit That Moves Us is for use with children in grades K-4. This guide helps educators explore such issues as prejudice and adversity through the use of children's books. Meant to be a resource and inspiration for teachers, it contains annotations for 23 children's books, lesson plans, discussion questions, and hands-on activities divided by curriculum areas. The guide helps children understand differences between people and the problems these differences can cause. The guide contains background articles for teachers on multiculturalism and moral education, as well as resource sections containing books, organizations, and videos. The book list includes:
